Negation in German
Negation or negative sentences in German grammar are formed with the words nicht (not) and kein (no/none). The tricky part is understanding when to use nicht and when to use kein and where to put them in a sentence.
When we make negative sentences in German, we have to use nicht or kein depending on the other words in the sentence. Nicht is similar to not, whereas kein is similar to not any/not a.
When to use nicht Negation in German
We use nicht to negate sentences in German. Nicht can be placed in different parts of a sentence depending on what we want to negate or emphasise. We use nicht:
- at the end of a sentence with verbs in simple tenses i.e. the present or past tense.
- Example:
- Er schläft nicht.
but before the full verb in compound tenses i.e. the perfect tense
- Example:
- Er hat gestern Nacht nicht geschlafen.
- before the definite article or possesive pronouns used with nouns
- Example:
- Er hat nicht das Essen bezahlt, sondern die Getränke.
- Ich habe nicht seine Adresse, sondern ihre.
- before names and proper nouns
- Example:
- Das ist nicht Udos Auto, sondern Susis.
- before pronouns
- Example:
- Ich habe nicht dich gerufen, sondern Petra.
- before adjectives
- Example:
- Das ist nicht fair!
- before adverbs
- Example:
- Sie geht nicht gerne schwimmen.
- before prepositions with indicators of place, time, and manner
- Example:
- Wir wohnen nicht in Berlin.
- Der Zug kommt nicht um 18 Uhr an.
- Otto hat das Loch nicht mit dem Spaten gegraben.
