German traditional love song

If you want to express your love in a beautiful way you need to listen to this German traditional love song.

This short, but beautiful song describes perfectly the feeling of young lovers who don’t care that the old folks frown about their way of love and life.

Found in the 19th century in Bettenhausen / Wetterau. Accompanied with a German traditional guitar, about 70 years old. I have added four bass strings to it (D, C, B, A), as often found on the German lutes.

Lyrics

Der Himmel ist so trübe

Es scheint weder Mond noch Stern

Das Mädchen, das ich liebe

Das ist so weit entfernt.

Ich schneid nicht gerne Geste

Und stehauch nicht gern früh auf

Bei meinem Mädchen lieg ich gern

Das ist der Welt Gebrauch

Die Leute, die hier um uns stehn

Wollen dir und mir kein Gut’s

Ich aber frage nicht danach

Und trag einen festen Mut.

Es will ein jeder wissen,

was ich und du haben getan

Wenn wir beide uns küssen,

was geht es die anderen an ?

Wir beide sind verbunden

In lauter Lieb und Treu

Glückselig sind die Stunden,

wenn wir beisammen sein.

Translation to English

The sky is dull and misty

No moon nor star to be seen

The girl which I love so much

Is far away from me.

I don’t like cutting short barley

I hate early to rise

I like to lie besides my girl

As does all the world likewise

The people who are around us

They are not on our side

But I don’t care a bit about that

And live as I please with pride

Everybody seems to know

What I and you have done

If we kiss and hug and love

That’s no business of anyone.

We both will stay forever

In deepest love so true

The hours we spend together are

So blissful for me and you.
